Suggestion for an artist struggling to find their voice

Hey Mr. Bellion, my name's Michael. I'm a 16 year old from Florida. for about 2 years now I've been on and off writing rap stuff (and by writing, I mean just lyrics, not any producing, although one day i hope to get there.) whenever i write my lyrics i see so much potential in the rhyme schemes and flows, but whenever i step up to the mic the confidence in my voice is nonexistent, and the vision i had for the song in my head just disappears. I think it has most to do with my tone of voice, as my words don't feel like they carry any weight when i say them, almost as if they're shaky and unstable. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on finding your voice/swagger in the booth. (btw, the booth is currently my closet, lol) anyway, thanks in advance,

Not Jon, but I’m 23, a hiphop producer/songwriter in ny and know a lot of people who “made it” so I can probably give you something of value I notice working w them. You said you’ve been writing on and off, I think you should change that and write everyday, even if it isn’t “good”. Each time you write, think of it as gaining XP. The issue you’re experiencing is less likely to do w confidence and more so w comforbility talking out loud. Music is these days, unfortunately, is less about what you say but how you convey what you say. You have to, in sense be delusional, even if you don’t believe what you’re saying. If you can’t feel yourself, no one will feel you, and the listeners will feel that. All in all, keep going, if your words don’t feel as strong when saying them find a different way to say them, and don’t hone in on finding your swag or aura, let your natural vibe be the aura.

I played trumpet for many years and at a high level in college. I hope this helps but for me I became a much better player when I realized some of my insecurities translated through the horn. What helped was understanding that the love and passion of making art through my instrument is a lot greater than being scared of making a mistake or being rejected because of not being good enough. The truth is we all have gifts and it’s our duty to give them life, not only for you but for others to enjoy. And PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE you got this !!
