Was curious if any of you have any things that you love in a song/music versus absolutely hate that immediately make the song a dislike (or at least not a favorite)
For example, I love most songs that have a clear piano or strings included. I’m also a fan of songs to be musically interesting rather than just lyrically. I know that sounds very vague but it is hard for me to describe. I was curious if you all had other music pet peeves or preferences! I think it would be fun to share them!

@Cassie this might be just a music producer thing but i absolutely can’t stand the new wave of quick/cheap rap that’s being pumped out nowadays. and the whole beat culture where they make a beat in 5 minutes, call it fire and it ends up making them millions of money. music without passion and thought is just plain garbage to me

@Cassie I like songs that have a beat to it, and lyrics that I can relate to. Like for example I love stupid deep bc of the lyrics I can relate to it. It also depends on my mood on what songs that I like in the moment.
@Amariez10585 I completely agree. Stupid deep is just one example of a song that really hits me hard whenever I listen to it. It’s deep and direct and I think everyone can relate to it on one level or another. It’s a super impactful song for me, even to this day.

@gunki I agree. That’s a good way to describe the lack of musical interest for me. People are so quick to produce a beat but then that beat is close to the only music in the entire song. Mix that with generic lyrics and I just couldn’t stay interested in the song. I think that’s one of the main reasons I got into JB. his music is and was constantly keeping me hooked throughout the entire song and his lyrics were so great that even now I still find myself analyzing them even after listening a countless amount of times.

Agreed. Music is an art though, and what most people appreciate aren't necessarily the good pieces, just the most showy lol @gunki

Bad lyrics, which jon to me hasnt had any bad lyrics. But like artists that be rapping about fing b words and gettin money like.... thats not relatable and so i wont like it.

I couldn’t agree more. Jon’s lyrics have seemed more more in depth and personal, but there are many songs out there now days that’s have very generic and superficial lyrics. I hope that the music will combat this enough to make me invested in the song, but if both the lyrics and the music isn’t doing it for me, it automatically is in the “meh” pile.

@Cassie i hate songs that have sound artifacts. you know, popping and the like. i always believed that these happen because they are making songs on high quality studio monitors, that can actually produce the highest/lowest frequencies clearly, while i am listening on average headphones that can't.

@Stang8 true. but is it art if it took no thought to make? i personally think its not. another instance would be people throwing paint on a canvas and people buying it for millions as “modern art” ive just never really agreed with it haha

The trend that's been going on for a while now where mid pop artists use choruses from 80's/90's songs just to hit something, i understand what Jon said about having to feed the beast but it just takes me off the song right away, i love samples when they're done the right way, but You can tell when they do it just to ride the popularity that the og song holds
-
I think for me is when something feels overproduced. Like the engineered sounds don't sound pleasant or a voice is overly digitalized. And the biggest thing is when there's too much going on. Like too many voices, too many drums, it just loses meaning and there is no room for the music to breath.
I CAN DO ANYTHING

@ChapsJH I too feel the same, but The Kid Laroi released a song called "Baby I'm Back," which samples, as you have guessed, "Baby Come Back," and it's one of my tops this month.
This is probably one of the ones you might be referring to, but I just wanted to see if you've heard it.
Told myself I'm keeping my faith, if it costs me my reputation, then take it; I'll give it all away

@gunki I think that art, like most skills, have levels. Although it takes little to no skill, I still believe it is art. But a low level artist will never be able to compete with a high level artist, even if they are more showy about it. It doesn't necessarily invalidate what they do, they just need to make sure to reign their ego. The general public doesn't really know who is good and who is bad, so they will appreciate whatever they want. Only those that seek for the best will find them imo

@Stang8 good points. but still, what i was referring to are those making significant money off their “art.” i can assure you that a guy who spent 10 minutes on a painting they are selling for 500,000$, their ego is and has been through the roof haha. i guess what im trying to say is i hate when people exploit the art/music scene , taking away from talent more passionate artists to get rich quick.
ranting all this but yeah your right, art is art. and if these people are getting so rich then people must like it so

@gunki Good point, super frustrating when the simplest stuff becomes the most viral. So dumb... then people start expecting it. Also rich people getting on the scene for tax writeoff purposes is SO annoying. Their taste is often terrible, and so bad pieces get overvalued just because they knew somebody with the net worth of a small country, not bc they actually have good pieces
